The iPod Touch is not an iPhone

Yesterday at Stream 2007, I saw someone taking a phone call on what looked like an iPhone. But when I looked closer, it was just an iPod Touch - a music player with no phone connectivity.
In the early 90s, when most people could not afford a mobile phone, gas stations used to do a roaring trade in plastic fake carphones, that people could pretend to talk into whilst stuck in traffic jams.
Is the iPod Touch destined to perform this role?
